Bio

Jeffrey P. Winer, PhD, is an Attending Psychologist and researcher at the Boston Children’s Hospital Trauma and Community Resilience Center (TCRC) and an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as the Director of Engagement for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Boston Children’s Hospital. 

Dr. Winer’s work is primarily focused on developing, disseminating, and implementing culturally-responsive & trauma-informed psychosocial interventions for youth and families of refugee and immigrant backgrounds. He is the past recipient of a Thrasher Research Fund Early Career Award and has been an investigator on multiple federally funded grants based within the TCRC, many with a central focus on belongingness, connection, and community. 

Through funding from SAMHSA via the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, he helps lead dissemination and innovation efforts for Trauma Systems Therapy for Refugees (TST-R), a clinical and organizational model for behavioral health service provision for refugee and immigrant youth. His academic scholarship has been published in a wide range of journals, and he is co-author of the book, Mental Health Practice with Immigrant and Refugee Youth.  Jeff has provided consultation and training to behavioral health providers, programs, and companies across the United States and Canada. Mental health prevention and intervention protocols and intervention tools that he has helped develop, adapt, or refine have been used around the world.

Academic Research

Dr. Winer’s academic work is primarily focused on developing, disseminating, and implementing culturally-responsive & trauma-informed psychological interventions for youth and families of refugee and immigrant backgrounds. The values of social justice, equity, and human rights are at the center of this work. He is the past recipient of a Thrasher Research Fund Early Career Award, and has been an investigator on numerous grants.

Behavioral Health Innovation & Impact

Dr. Winer has served as site PI or Co-PI on multiple large-scale site implementations of TST-R, a psychotherapy and behavioral health organizational model for refugee/immigrant youth and families. He has helped implement and ‘stand up’ multiple psychosocial interventions he has helped develop or adapt across clinical and educational contexts. He is Co-Director, with Dr. Luna Mulder, of the TST-R Implementation Science and Practice Advisory Board, a national advisory board of TST-R programs and providers across the United States. His academic scholarship has been published in a wide range of journals and he is co-author with Dr. Heidi Ellis and Dr. Saida Abdi of the book, “Mental Health Practice with Immigrant and Refugee Youth” published by the American Psychological Association.

At Boston Children’s Hospital he Co-Directs the Fuss Research Seminar with Dr. David Glahn (Chief of Research, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences). At Harvard Medical School, he is one of three Boston Children’s-based mental health researchers appointed to the HMS Psychiatry Research Committee.

He has provided consultation and training to behavioral health providers, programs, and companies across the United States and Canada. Mental health prevention and intervention protocols and intervention tools that he has helped develop, adapt, or refine are currently used around the world. He has provided background content expertise on refugee/immigrant youth mental health to both local (e.g., WGBH) and national media outlets (e.g., The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal).

Outside of his work at Boston Children’s Hospital, he maintains a private practice focused on culturally-responsive evidence-based psychotherapy for youth, adults, and families. He also continues to provide consultation at the McLean Hospital 3East Adolescent DBT Partial Hospital and helps lead McLean Hospital’s Multicultural Psychology Consultation Team (MPCT) which he Co-Founded with Dr. Stephanie Pinder-Amaker.

His wife is also a psychologist and they have two awesome daughters.
